What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)
| Rusting occurs when oxygen from the air mixes with water. The surface of the iron reacts with the oxygen mixing in the water. Which forms iron oxide. When the iron oxide reacts with the water, it forms hydrated iron oxide. It forms red stuff which we call rust. The process continues until all the iron is eaten up, that is called corrosion. |
How could you prevent something from rusting?
| You can prevent something from rotting by putting layers of paint or putting it distant from water. |
Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.
| I’ve learnt that salt water makes iron rust even faster. I’ve also learnt that the Harbour bridge has 3 layers of paint to prevent it from rusting since it’s near salt water. The paint on the Harbour bridge lasts for at least 4 years! I have also learnt that iron can rust faster or slower depending on its surroundings and environment. |
